Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation for Adult Cerebral X-linked ALD
Based on review of data from 14 patients with adult cerebral X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy who were treated with hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, the authors suggested that this might be an intervention that potentially could have long-term benefits and recommended further studies to evaluate this therapy.

Vascular Risk Factors and Their Role in the Development of Alzheimer’s Disease
This study has found an association between mid-life, but not late-life, vascular risk factors and brain amyloid deposition as imaged on amyloid-labeled PET.

Serotonin Transporter Increases in Premotor Parkinson’s Disease
In a small cross-sectional study, increased serotonin transporter was detected using 11C-DASB PET in striatum, hypothalamus, and brainstem in LRRK2 carriers who did not have clinical Parkinson’s disease. This contrasts with later decreases previously described and implies a likely early compensatory mechanism.

Autoimmune Antibodies in Patients with Epilepsy of Unknown Etiology
In this prospective study of patients with epilepsy of unknown origin (including new-onset and established epilepsy), more than 20% of patients were found to have neurological autoantibodies strongly suggesting autoimmune origin of their epilepsy.

Predicting Electrical Cardioversion Failure
A study of the 30-day success rate of electrical cardioversion of acute atrial fibrillation revealed five clinical predictors of recurrence. These were combined into a risk score that could be useful to avoid unnecessary cardioversions in the acute setting.

Tolvaptan Fails to Improve Dyspnea in Acute Heart Failure
In patients hospitalized for acute heart failure, adding tolvaptan to furosemide lead to increased weight and fluid loss, but did not improve dyspnea at 24 hours.

Restricting Fluoroquinolone Use Reduces CDI More Than Infection Control Methods
An observational study from England showed that restricting fluoroquinolone use reduced incidence of Clostridium difficile infection more than would be predicted by improved infection control methods alone.

Risk Factors for Hospital Readmissions Ending in Death or Transition to Hospice
In this retrospective cohort study, multiple factors were identified during initial hospitalization, including sepsis and shock, that were associated with a hospital readmission within 30 days resulting in death or transition to hospice. Infection was a frequent cause for readmissions that ended in death.

Value of Monitoring ECG Lead aVR in Exercise Stress Testing
Analysis of ST transients in aVR during exercise ECG testing can provide additional diagnostic information in patients suspected of having ischemic heart disease.
