ED targeted by impostors . . . not this time!
ED targeted by impostors . . . not this time!
Here’s the other side of the impostors coin — or to put it another way, an incident that proves things aren’t always what they seem.
April 3, 2005, at about 7:30 p.m., three well-dressed individuals of Middle Eastern or Indian appearance entered the ED at Prince William Hospital in Manassas, VA. They said they were representatives of Dunkin’ Donuts and were interested in opening a franchise.
They talked with an ED technician about how many people were employed in the hospital, how many worked in the ED, how many beds there were, and the number of staff on the second and third shifts. When the tech became suspicious and challenged them, they left the premises.
An alarming story, no doubt, and the tech was appropriately cautious. There’s only one problem: The individuals apparently were exactly who they claimed to be.
"They were representatives from Dunkin’ Donuts," says Vincent Antignano, a detective with the Prince William County police force assigned to the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force. "We verified everything with the Dunkin’ Donuts corporate office."
Antignano says he doesn’t blame the ED tech for being suspicious. "Nowadays, when you see three men of Middle Eastern appearance, everyone gets suspicious," he concedes, "But they contacted us, and we verified their story."
