New case management credential announced
A new credential for directors of case management is now under development by the South Natick, MA-based Center for Case Management. Testing for the credential, whose acronym has yet to be determined, will commence in March 1998, according to the center.
The Center for Case Management is developing the credential because it claims it has "identified the distinct and ever-deepening level of knowledge required by directors of case management and care coordination departments. Advanced responsibility and accountability requires a new level of certification."
The center defines directors of case management as supervisors who perform at least eight of the following functions on a daily basis:
• case finding;
• comprehensive assessment of client situation;
• evaluation and coordination of the plan of care;
• matching client resources to client needs;
• monitoring delivery of services;
• critical thinking, appropriate prioritization, and time management;
• measurement and evaluation of financial and clinical outcomes;
• accountability for financial and clinical outcomes;
• effective leadership displayed in the performance of current role;
• effective communication;
• evaluation of response to the learning needs of clients, clinicians, and community.
To be eligible to take the credentialing test, you must meet one of the following criteria: three years’ experience as a case manager, one year of experience as a director of case management, or current employment as a case manager with an existing case management certification.
The Center for Case Management will release applications and information on costs and testing sites on Feb. 20, 1998. t
