Poll findings
A recent poll conducted by the National Osteoporosis Foundation in Washington, DC, found that women ages 45 years and older have an extremely high level of awareness of the disease. Other findings include the following:
1. More than half of the women interviewed think they are likely to develop osteoporosis; that perception decreases slightly with age.
2. Many respondents connect certain activities, such as exercise and eating certain foods or taking supplements with helping them avoid osteoporosis.
3. More than 75% of respondents said they walk for exercise specifically to avoid osteoporosis; 59% eat foods or take calcium supplements for this reason.
4. Walking is the most popular exercise to prevent bone loss among this group. Eight in 10 women report walking for exercise three or more times per week.
5. Six in 10 women use diet to prevent osteoporosis, mainly by taking calcium supplements.
6. early one-third of the women polled have at least one risk factor for developing osteoporosis; one-fifth have two risk factors.
7. As risk factors increase, women are not more likely to engage in exercise or take dietary precautions.
8. Respondents perceived physical activity as a more powerful prevention tool than foods and supplements. In fact, a combined program of proper calcium intake along with exercise is needed for bone loss prevention.
9. College-educated women and those with a household income greater than $25,000 engage in activities to prevent osteoporosis.
