Illinois recovery care project begins
The Illinois Health Facilities Planning Board approved the first sites for that state's recovery care demonstration project in October and November. Ingalls Same Day Surgery in Tinley Park and St. Therese Medical Center in Waukegan received permits to open recovery care centers that keep patients for 48 hours for standard care, with extensions of up to 24 hours if medical need is documented by the attending physician.
"We're off and running," says Mark Mayo, executive director of the Illinois Freestanding Surgery Center Association in St. Charles. "There will be a data collection mechanism, and some reports [will be sent] back to the general assembly."
In all, 12 facilities will be selected to participate in the five-year demonstration project, Mayo says. Private insurers are expected to reimburse for the recovery care, he says. *
