Pharmacy groups develop oral counseling guide
Nearly a dozen pharmacy organizations are finalizing a national report they will submit to the federal Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) outlining pros, cons, and solutions for improving how patients are counseled about the drugs pharmacists are dispensing. Called the National Symposium on Oral Counseling by Pharmacists About Prescription Medicines, the group met in response to an HHS call to arms on ways to improve the overall state of prescription medicine.
Aspects of the study include consumer, practical application, and economic issues, coordinated by the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy’s Center on Drugs and Public Policy. Pharmacy groups providing input include the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy, American Pharmaceutical Association, American Society of Consultant Pharmacists, American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, National Association of Boards of Pharmacy, National Community Pharmacists Association, National Association of Chain Drug Stores, and the Pharmaceutical Care Management Association.
