What’s in a name? A lot if it’s Columbia
Columbia University and Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corp. have reached a settlement in their year-long battle over the Columbia name.
The Columbia University medical school was victorious in its legal battle to stop the Nashville, TN-based hospital and home care giant from using its name in the New York area and to limit advertising in the region.
The for-profit hospital corporation has dropped the name Columbia from some of its hospitals and its corporate headquarters. The company has been under a massive Medicare investigation for fraud recently.
According to a Wall Street Journal article, university officials have expressed their satisfaction over the outcome of the battle. The suit was filed in September 1996, and the university lost the first round in U.S. District Court in Manhattan. An appeal was filed in the U.S. Court of Appeals.
Columbia/HCA approached the school in recent weeks with an offer to end the lawsuit, the article said. No money was exchanged as part of the deal. t
