Saw Palmetto Popular, Frequently Covered by Media
Following is a round-up of what various media have said about saw palmetto to give you an idea of what patients might have heard.
Television ad campaign: The national health store chain GNC featured saw palmetto products in a recent television campaign aimed at men and women. John Troup, PhD, vice president of scientific affairs for GNC, notes many women purchase saw palmetto for their husbands.
Men’s Health agazine: In April 1996, the magazine termed saw palmetto a "natural alternative" to traditional medications. In this case, the main drug mentioned is Proscar (finasteride). Readers were advised to consider saw palmetto instead of finasteride and other drugs, as the side effects of other drugs are often mentioned in the media; impotence, dizziness, low libido, and breast enlargement are commonly noted.
Better Nutrition: n the August 1997 issue, the editors discussed clinical studies, mostly in Europe, in which men found the herbal product less likely than finasteride to cause impotence or decreased libido. Like most botanical supplements, saw palmetto comes in more than one preparation. While standardized extracts are commonly available and recommended most frequently, powderized berries remain popular, Troup of GNC notes. He explains that some men still prefer the powderized berries as being more "natural."
