Here is a partial listing of resource materials available which address firearms injury prevention:
· The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) offers a number of educational materials, including a speaker's kit entitled "Preventing Firearm Injury: Protecting Our Children." The kit contains slides, narrative, training tips, and other resources helpful for planning training sessions for public and professional audiences. A Steps to Prevent (STOP) Kit is a comprehensive counseling package on the health risks of firearms to patients and their families, with special emphasis on the risks to children of guns kept in the home. The package, which was developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Center to Prevent Handgun Violence, contains a monograph, poster, educational flyer, counseling tip sheet, suggested reading list, and audiotape on counseling families about firearm injury prevention. A Firearms Injury Prevention Resource Guide contains information on state and national organizations working to prevent firearm injury. All materials are free of charge. · The Handgun Epidemic Lowering Plan (HELP) offers a variety of educational resources. The GUNS brochure is a counseling pamphlet for physicians to use when discussing the risks of keeping guns in the home. They are available in bulk at a cost of 25 cents per copy. The HELP Network acts as a clearinghouse for research on the epidemic of firearms injuries and public health strategies to reduce it.
