Here are answers to your questions about Mifeprex
1. What is Mifeprex? Mifeprex is the first Food and Drug Administration-approved (FDA) early option pill providing women with a safe and effective nonsurgical option for ending early pregnancy. Mifeprex blocks a hormone necessary to sustain pregnancy. When followed by another medicine, misoprostol, Mifeprex ends pregnancy.
2. When is Mifeprex appropriate? Mifeprex is an early option pill that can be used to end a pregnancy from the time a woman knows she is pregnant up to 49 days after the beginning of her last menstrual period.
3. What are the advantages of Mifeprex? Mifeprex is a noninvasive early option for ending pregnancy. Mifeprex comes in pill form, is taken orally, and avoids surgery or anesthesia in most cases. Technology has made it possible to detect pregnancy very early. Now with Mifeprex, as soon as a woman knows she is pregnant, she can take immediate action. Mifeprex is the only FDA-approved pill for ending early pregnancy.
4. How does Mifeprex work? Mifeprex blocks progesterone, a hormone necessary for a pregnancy to continue. When followed by another medicine, misoprostol, Mifeprex ends the pregnancy.
In more detail, Mifeprex blocks progesterone, a naturally produced hormone that prepares the lining of the uterus for a fertilized egg and helps maintain pregnancy. Without progesterone, the lining of the uterus softens and breaks down, and bleeding begins. Mifeprex is followed by a prostaglandin that causes the uterus to contract, which helps complete the process.
Prostaglandins are substances made naturally by the lining of the womb during menstruation that cause contractions of the uterus. The prostaglandin used following Mifeprex is misoprostol, a drug already available in the United States.
5. How effective is Mifeprex? Mifeprex followed by misoprostol is approximately 92% to 95% effective.
