Experience and education top the certification list
The following information on eligibility for the Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) certification is provided by the American Hospital Association and the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management. The eligibility standards are designed to include experienced risk managers but exclude others.
To participate in the CPHRM examination, a candidate must meet these conditions:
Work experience — This criterion is met by one of the following:
- A minimum of three years of full-time work experience in health care risk manage-ment in a health care setting or with a provider of services to the health care industry, with at least 50% of job duties dedicated to health care risk management.
- A minimum of 3,000 hours of work experience in health care risk management in a health care setting or with a provider of services to the health care industry, obtained over a period not to exceed five years.
Education — This criterion is met by one of the following:
- Distinguished Fellow of the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management (DFASHRM).
- Fellow of the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management (FASHRM).
- Registered Nurse (RN).
- Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU).
- Baccalaureate degree or higher.
- Associate’s degree, plus 25 points earned from among the following categories (see p. 113).
- High school diploma or its equivalent, plus 50 points earned from among the following categories (see p. 113).
- American Board of Healthcare Risk Management (ABHRM) (25 points).
- Associate in Claims (AIC) (25 points).
- Associate in Loss Control Management (ALCM) (25 points).
- American Society for Healthcare Risk Management (ASHRM) Healthcare Risk Management Certificate Program (25 points).
- Associate in Risk Management (ARM) (25 points).
- Associate in Underwriting (AU) (25 points).
- Certified Healthcare Environmental Manager (CHEM) (25 points).
- Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP) (25 points).
- Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ) (25 points).
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP) (25 points).
- Healthcare Risk Management Certificate Program, MMI Companies Inc. (HRM) (25 points).
- Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) (25 points).
- Registered Professional Liability Underwriter (25 points).
- Risk Management for Health Care Organizations (RMHC 351) course (Insurance Institute of America) (10 points).
- TEACH Program (The Virginia Insurance Reciprocal) (25 points).
- Certified, Licensed, or Registered Healthcare Technician/Technologist (25 points).
- The Healthcare Risk Management Certificate (The New England Healthcare Assembly). Attendance at continuing education programs on health care risk management or related topics within the last five years (1 point/4 hours, maximum 25 points).
- Speaking at professional meetings on health care risk management or related topics within the last five years (not including speaking required as a regular job responsibility) (1 point/hour, maximum 25 points).
- Authoring published professional articles/ texts on health care risk management or related topics within the last five years (not including authoring required as a regular job responsibility) (5 points/article, 10 points/book chapter, maximum 25 points).
Note: For the purposes of this certification program, "health care risk management" includes these content areas: loss prevention/reduction, claims management, risk financing, regulatory/ accreditation compliance, risk management operations, and bioethics.
