The Melanoma Research Foundation
The Melanoma Research Foundation (MRF) is a patient-founded organization dedicated to providing funds for melanoma research by seeking private donations and other sources of contribution. The MRF Research Award Program in Melanoma Research is aimed at encouraging new generations of scientists and clinicians working in basic or clinical research projects related to melanoma. These awards will be made every year to the most promising young melanoma investigators who are beginning a research career emphasizing melanoma-related projects and have not yet established strong federal funding. In addition, emphasis will be placed on projects that explore innovative approaches to understanding melanoma and its treatment.
Both basic and clinical research projects will be considered for funding. Researchers who are either permanent residents or citizens of the United States, hold a PhD or MD degree, and a title equivalent to assistant professor or have at least four years of postdoctoral experience are eligible to apply. Applicants should have evidence indicating strong departmental or institutional support and commitment, and be within eight years of receiving their advanced degree. The proposed research must be conducted in a non-profit research organization, or medical or educational institution located in the United States. Each principal investigator or head of the laboratory is limited to one application per year. Applications primarily for the support of a postdoctoral fellow will also be considered.
Grants will be made for a one-year period. A no-cost extension of up to one additional year may be permitted, given sufficient justification. The total amount of the award generally cannot exceed $20,000. Under unusual circumstances, a request may be made for a budget of up to $25,000, provided adequate justification is given. Institutional indirect costs are disallowed by this grant program. Funds used for travel must be limited to $1000 and cannot be used for international travel. Two sealed letters of recommendation, a letter of departmental support and an original, and six copies of the completed grant application must be received by July 1. Awards will be announced by December, to begin in January of the following year. Submissions should be mailed to: Research Grant Committee; The Melanoma Research Foundation; 1111 Cornwall, Suite 209; Bellingham, WA 98225. Further information on the grant application process is available at the MRF Web site at www.melanoma.org or by writing to: The Melanoma Research Foundation; 23704-5 El Toro Rd., #206; Lake Forest, CA 92630. Telephone/Fax: 1-800-MRF-1290.
