Variety of organizations offer outcomes projects
The following organizations offer outcomes monitoring programs that may be useful to same-day surgery managers for benchmarking purposes. Each association has different criteria for inclusion, so please contact the individual association for more detailed information.
• Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC).
The AAAHC measures operational, clinical, and patient satisfaction indicators. The testing phase is complete. There were no fees initially, but there may be fees in the future. Any ambulatory facility may participate.

• American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons.
The society has completed an outcomes study on breast implant explanation and breast reduction. A new study focuses on liposuction. There are no fees, and any board-certified plastic surgeon may submit data. The data help physicians evaluate their performance and their patients’ satisfaction.

• Federated Ambulatory Surgery Association (FASA).
FASA’s 25-question survey collects information on operational, clinical, and patient satisfaction indicators. The data are collected quarterly from FASA members. There are no fees. The project is open to FASA members.

• Musculoskeletal Education and Research Institute (MERI).
Originally started as a project of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the Musculo skeletal Outcomes Data Evaluation and Manage ment System (MODEMS) is now managed by MERI. The system uses easy-to- fill-out surgeon and patient questionnaires to collect data on general health, demographics, ICD-9-CM and CPT codes, and on pain and quality of life before and after treatment. Reports are generated annually. The fee is no more than $500 per year, per surgeon, and the program is open to orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, and rheumatologists.

• Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES).
SAGES has developed an on-line outcomes initiative that includes a surgical log to collect standard outcomes data such as infection rates for most general surgical procedures. Data are submitted on-line, and patient and physician identifiers are stripped before submission. Comparisons are obtained immediately. There are no fees. The project is open to SAGES members.

• Surgical Outcomes Information Exchange (SOIX).
SOIX provides outcomes measurement and benchmarking services for surgery centers. Operational processes, clinical outcomes, and patient satisfaction can be measured. The annual subscription costs range from $870 to more than $3,000.
