Latex sites provide range of information
By Geoff Kelafant, MD, MSPH, FACOEM
Interest in latex allergy has increased greatly in the health care field over the past few years, as has been well-documented in Hospital Employee Health. The Web offers a number of good starting points for latex information.
OSHA Latex Allergy Links, at www.osha-slc.gov/SLTC/latexallergy/, is a list of government and non-government documents and other links regarding latex. This page is organized in the typical recognition, evaluation, controls, and compliance format OSHA uses for more popular topics. This is a good place to find many of the government source documents that frequently find their way into discussions on latex.
Latex Allergy Links from the Education for Latex Allergy/Support Team and Information Coalition (ELASTIC), at pw2.netcom.com/~nam1/latex_ allergy.html, is an extensive listing of links and documents regarding latex and latex allergy with daily updates. Topics include litigation, legislation, gloves, hospitals, organization position statements, product lists, protocols, newspaper and journal articles, worker’s compensation, and many strictly medical issues.
The Latex Allergy Home Page of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, at allergy.mcg.edu/physicians/ltxhome.html, has a medical orientation. Various position statements as well as practical advice can be found here.
The Position Statement on Latex of the American College of Occupational and Environ mental Medicine’s Medical Center Occupational Health Section is at www.occenvmed.net/mcoh/ latexall.htm. This statement from hospital occupational health physicians places particular emphasis on the safety and health of health care workers.
