Here’s where to go for graduate work
Here’s a look at some graduate programs specifically designed for physicians who want a graduate degree in business:
• Kennesaw State University in suburban Atlanta offers an MBA program for physicians with a DO or MD degree. The program lasts 21 months and involves one weekend a month on campus, a five-day residency at the start of the program, a four-day residency in Washington, DC, focusing on health care and public policy, and a three-day quality symposium at the National Forum on Quality Improvement in Health Care.
The cost of the program is $25,500, including tuition, books, and the loan of a laptop computer. Travel and lodging costs are not included.

• The University of Wisconsin at Madison offers a master’s program in administrative medicine. The program covers 18 subjects and lasts four semesters. It combines brief but intensive periods of study on campus with work at home via distance education techniques. Physi cians attend one week at the beginning and one week at the end of each semester. There are weekly audio teleconferences in which the professors and students interact, and a group project done by teleconference and submitted on the Internet. The next class will begin at the end of July and graduate in 2001. The cost is $16,500 a year.

• The University of South Florida in Tampa offers an accredited MBA program with courses in financial management, accounting, taxation, and health policy analysis. Participants attend the campus lectures and study independently, and then mail, fax, or e-mail their exams. The program also includes research projects that are reviewed by faculty members.
The next class begins Aug. 22. Participants attend an intensive on-campus program two weeks at a time, three times a year for two years. The cost is $33,000 for Florida residents and $47,000 for out-of-state students. Books, software, and meals while classes are in session are included. • The Alliance for Medical Management Education, a joint venture of the University of Texas at Dallas School of Management and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, offers a master’s of science in medical management degree for physicians only.
The program is divided into eight week-long modules spaced every three months. Each module earns three credit hours. The course of study earns both academic and CME credits. Classes run from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day.

• The American College of Physician Executives in Tampa, FL, offers a graduate program in medical management that can lead to certification in medical management or a master’s degree. The program is offered in conjunction with Tulane University in New Orleans and Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. Physicians take a series of courses at their own pace, offered at locations throughout the country. After they receive 218 CME hours, they can take a nine-day on-campus Capstone Course that results in a certification in medical management from one of the universities and the American College of Physician Executives.
Physicians who complete the Capstone Course are eligible to begin work on their master’s degree in medical management, which requires three one-week on-campus sessions and independent study over a period of three semesters. The cost is about $13,500 for the course work required for the certification program and an additional $15,000 for the master’s degree work.

• The University of California at Irvine offers a Health Care Executive MBA program for physicians, nurses, health care executives, and managers. In addition to independent study at home, participants attend classes once a month for three and a half consecutive days, beginning at 5 p.m. on Thursday and continuing through Sunday noon. Students are housed in a nearby residential facility. The program lasts for 24 months at a cost of about $60,000.
