MCO boosts cap rates to physicians who teach
Aetna US Healthcare has taken nationwide its medical school program offering enhanced capitation rates to preceptors who teach students. Originated at New York Medical College (NYMC), the goal of the program is to provide an extra award and incentive to encourage physicians who are part of the Aetna US Healthcare network to do community-based teaching.
The original pilot program at NYMC was negotiated by Martha Grayson, MD, senior associate dean for primary care at NYMC, and Richard Bernstein, MD, who at the time was senior medical director of Aetna US HealthCare of New York.
Aetna US Healthcare says approximately 380 physician offices have received credit for the program to date through a variety of medical schools.
A unique feature of the program is that it provides reimbursement through a managed care organization for teaching medical students in the office. For instance, preceptors affiliated with NYMC receive the enhanced rate if they teach the students and participate in the schools’ faculty development programs.
"Physicians who take our students and attend our faculty development receive a ½% increase in capitation rates. We also offered a second faculty development on communication skills. If they attended that as well, their capitation went up 1%," says Grayson.
