Firearm Injury Statistics
· Non-fatal, firearm-related injuries treated in hospital EDs outnumber fatal firearm-related injuries by about 3 to 1.
· Approximately two-thirds of all nonfatal firearm-related injuries were classified assaults or legal interventions (e.g., police) and almost half of fatal firearm-related injuries were firearm homicide/legal intervention.
· Suicide attempts made up the smallest proportion of nonfatal firearm-related injuries (6.9%) and accounted for the largest proportion of firearms-related deaths (47.8%).
· Unintentional firearm-related injuries comprised 19.8% of all nonfatal cases and 3.8% of all deaths.
· In 1995, 35,957 people were killed by firearms in the United States. Of those, 51% were suicide and 44% were homicide. Three percent were unintentional.
