Two new food products ease dietary compliance
Many congestive heart failure (CHF) patients find it difficult to comply to strict dietary restrictions necessary to manage their disease. A new salt substitute from AMBI in Tarrytown, NY, and a new home meal delivery program from Campbell Soup in Camden, NJ, are both designed to make dietary compliance both tastier and easier.
For about $10 a day, Campbell ships a week’s worth of breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and snacks by parcel service to customers’ homes. The Intelligent Cuisine program, now being test- marketed in Ohio, was developed in conjunction with the American Heart Association in Dallas and the American Dietetic Association in Chicago to meet the dietary needs of 60 million American adults with high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, and type II diabetes.
Clinical tests meet with success
In clinical tests of 800 adults at eight North American university medical centers, the Intelligent Cuisine program successfully reduced blood cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar.
In addition to the prepared meals, customers receive newsletters and videos on exercise, nutrition, and behavior modification. Customers also can call a toll-free hotline for individual nutrition counseling with a registered dietician.
AMBI recently announced that its Cardia Salt Alternative is now available over the counter on pharmacy shelves nationwide. Clinical studies show Cardia is an effective dietary aid to help reduce blood pressure in patients with hypertension and heart disease.
Spoon for spoon
Cardia has 54% less sodium than table salt plus the added benefit of potassium and magnesium. The salt substitute can be used just like table salt measure for measure in cooking, baking, and at the table. It comes in portion controlled packets, each containing 1¼8 teaspoon.
Preclinical studies found that Cardia does not interfere with the blood pressure lowering effect of commonly prescribed medications including beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, and calcium channel blockers.
