Wanted: Trainers to teach staff the big picture’

The Dilemma: "What have other hospitals done as far as educating access staff on the global picture how what they do impacts other areas?" asks Tammy Laitala, team leader of registration at Lake Forest (IL) Hospital. "Are there companies that offer a broad overview of patient accounting functions and an explanation of the UB92 billing form? What registrars put in on the front end comes out on the back end, and it’s important that they understand that."
The Background: Laitala has a short list of companies that provide similar training, but their focus is more specific than she would like. "The [names] we’ve been given are of those whose training is very Medicare-specific, that address, for example, the 72-hour rule or different types of diagnosis codes."
She would like information on trainers who can give her staff a more general primer in patient accounting. "I don’t want to reinvent the wheel if I don’t have to," she says.
