American, Spanish nurses form international alliance
The National League for Nursing of New York City has formed a partnership with a nursing council in Spain to promote nursing education and improve quality of care.
The agreement with the General Council of Graduate Colleges of Nursing in Spain, based in Madrid, will allow the two councils to share technology and to jointly sponsor research, seminars, workshops, and promotion of the nursing profession.
"In general, we were looking to improve and enhance nursing education," says David Osborn, a spokesman for the National League for Nursing.
"The Spanish council has an excellent reputation among European nursing councils of being innovative, forward thinking, and responding to changes in nursing practice by being willing to integrate the curriculum," Osborn adds.
Together, the two organizations will develop accreditation programs in basic and post-basic nursing in Spain. And eventually, they might set up an exchange program for nurses, Osborn says.
Also, they’ll establish a joint committee to coordinate the partners’ activities.
Educational issues facing the American and Spanish nursing professions are similar, Osborn says. "They’re trying to respond to changes in nursing practice through a responsive curriculum which is much like what’s going on here."
Maximo A. Gonzalez Juardo, president of the Spanish Council, issued a comment, saying, "The National League for Nursing’s leadership in nursing education and its inclusion of all levels of nursing preparation makes us especially pleased with this partnership."
Founded in 1893, the National League for Nursing has a similar partnership with the national nursing education organization of Thailand. And the league is in the process of forming a partnership with the Democratic Nursing Organization of South Africa.
