Clarification
In an article titled "Support surface changes are saving millions" (Wound Care, April 1998, p. 47), we stated that January 1996 revisions related to Medicare reimbursement of pressure-reducing support surfaces stopped reimbursement for these mattresses if used for preventive care. In fact, the guidelines do contain provisions for preventive use, but only for support surfaces classified as Group 1. The policy says a Group 1 mattress overlay or mattress is covered if the patient is:
1. completely immobile (ie, cannot make changes in body position without assistance, or
2. has limited mobility AND one or more of the following: impaired nutritional status, fecal or urinary incontinence, altered sensory perception, or compromised circulatory status.
The Medical University of South Carolina Department of Continuing Education offers a three-week on-site wound care education course for nurses. Course dates for 1998 are as follows:
July 6 - July 25, 1998
Aug. 31- Sept. 19, 1998
Nov. 2 - Nov. 21, 1998
