The Episodes Grouper analyzes the course of a patient’s treatment across inpatient, outpatient, and pharmacy services. The end product is a record of the course of care for a single illness or condition. The latest enhancement to the tool, offered by the MEDSTAT Group of Ann Arbor, MI, is the power for severity-stratified analyses. The stratification component is patient-based, not service-based, notes Lou Diamond, MD, MEDSTAT vice president and medical director. For example, if a patient has an angiogram, the Episodes Grouper does not automatically bump the case into a higher severity category. The severity stratification algorithms are based on clinical criteria and input from clinicians.
