Orion Project features continuous review
The Orion Project, a program being piloted in Pennsylvania and Arizona by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, aims to shape a new accreditation process through a partnership with the healthcare organizations it reviews.
The initiative is testing four proposals:
• implementation of a regional representative program;
• development of a regionally dedicated survey team;
• adaptation of performance measures;
• reduction of interorganization duplication;
In the spring before the October 1995 Joint Commission survey of Penn State’s Milton Hershey (PA) Medical Center, the Orion Project assigned a regional representative to help the facility prepare, says Karen McKinley, CHAM, manager of admission and utilization services.
The representative met with hospital personnel, including Joint Commission preparation team members, and with individual department directors. She personally received assistance from the representative in developing a self-study program for her staff on age-related development and interventions.
Orion Project survey teams are assigned geographically, McKinley explains. The team still consists of a physician, a nurse, and an administrator, but as part of Orion, they receive extra training. Team members live in the area they will survey.
