AORN course trains industry reps
As same-day surgery managers look at the role of the health care industry representative within the operating room, one of the key challenges is making sure that representative knows the proper "etiquette" for the setting, says C. Elizabeth Fitzgerald, RN, CNOR, MS, program manager at Education Design, the for-profit arm of the Denver-based Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN).
A course, "Operating Room Protocol for Medical Industry Professionals," is offered by Education Design to vendors whose employees might go into operating rooms to provide education. The recently approved AORN recommendations for guidelines that govern a health care industry representative’s presence and activities in an operating room include the recommendation that industry reps receive training in operating room protocol, says Fitzgerald. If the same-day surgery program doesn’t have the resources to provide this training, the industry representative’s employer can utilize Education Design’s course to train the representatives.
Making sure the health care industry representative is knowledgeable about operating room traffic patterns, aseptic techniques, universal precautions, patient rights, and the role of each of the perioperative team members is important for each same-day surgery manager, even if the representative is a former OR nurse, says Fitzgerald.
"In our course, we stress the fact that an industry representative’s role is different from the previous role as a perioperative team member," she explains. "The industry rep is not a patient care giver, and should be in the operating room only at the times their product is in use."
