These SIC codes are likely to be inspected
Employers involved in sheet metalwork are among those mostly likely to be inspected by federal safety officials, according to the latest information from a company providing research into inspections conducted by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
OSHA Data, a consulting firm in Maplewood, NJ, gathers information from the databases maintained by OSHA and analyzes that data for patterns that can be of use to occupational health providers and employers.
Periodically, the company’s compiles a top 10 list of standard industrial classification (SIC) codes from past inspections. That list can help occupational health professionals determine what employers are most likely to be inspected in the near future.
OSHA determines which companies will be inspected by looking at industry-specific lost work injury rates and other factors, explains Matthew M. Carmel, MS, CIH, CSP, president of OSHA Data. If an industry’s injury statistics exceeds the national average, local OSHA offices locate all businesses in their jurisdiction with those SIC codes and target them for unannounced inspections.
The list of targeted industries is kept secret, but Carmel says his top 10 list is a good approximation based on past inspections.
This is the latest list of SIC codes Carmel says are likely to be targeted for an OSHA inspection:
• 3444 — sheet metalwork
• 3441 — fabricated structural metal
• 3089 — plastics products
• 3443 — fabricated plate work
• 3731 — ship building and repairing
• 3499 — fabricated metal products
• 3442 — metal doors, sash, and trim
• 3714 — motor vehicle parts and accessories
• 3469 — metal stampings
• 2431 — millwork
