Commission releases case studies of best practices
The American Accreditation Healthcare Commission/URAC in Washington, DC, recently released Models of Care: Case Studies in Innovative Healthcare Delivery. The book includes detailed descriptions and analysis of almost 100 effective health care programs developed by health maintenance organizations, preferred provider organizations, employers, and other organizations.
Programs selected for the book represent comprehensive, innovative approaches to improving health care and health outcomes across the continuum of prevention, acute, and chronic care.
Steps to improvement
Chapters include:

CMSA releases state of the science paper
The Council for Case Management Account ability (CCMA) and the Case Management Society of America (CMSA) in Little Rock, AR, have released "Patient Adherence Outcome Indicators and Measurement in Case Manage ment Healthcare," the first of three "State of the Science Papers" planned for the near future.
The paper includes evidence of:
• the link between patient adherence and outcomes of health care and case management;
• evaluation of clinical indicators of adherence and related measures;
• analysis of the sensitivity of potential evidence-based measures of adherence and their feasibility in clinical quality measurement;
• identification of case management inter ventions known to affect adherence indicators;
• recommendations for adherence indicators/measures for future CCMA outcomes-focused research and development activities.

March of Dimes offers useful data on infant health
The March of Dimes in White Plains, NY, has several useful reports on maternal and infant health available to health care professionals for a minimum cost.
Available titles include:
• March of Dimes StatBook: Statistics for Mon i toring Maternal and Infant Health, 1999. This statistical resource book provides quick access to key national and selected state and local maternal and infant health data. It is designed to inform and guide researchers, planners, clinicians, case managers, policy makers, educators, and other health professionals concerned with maternal and infant health. It includes more than 200 pages of graphs and tables with interpretive text for use in presentations. The book costs $25.
• Perinatal Profiles: Statistics for Monitoring State Maternal and Infant Health, 1999. This book is a collection of state-specific profiles of current perinatal health statistics. There are four-page profiles for each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia, and a two-page profile for Puerto Rico. The profiles include prenatal care utilization, birth defect rates, infant mortality rates, low birth weight, and health insurance coverage. The book costs $25.
• Birth Defects and Infant Mortality: A National and Regional Profile. This 90-page technical report to the March of Dimes StatBook provides an in-depth profile of selected national, regional, and state infant mortality and birth defect data as well as estimates of the incidence and financial costs of birth defects. The report includes camera-ready graphs with accompanying narrative. The cost is $12.95.
In addition, the March of Dimes has several other resources for health care professionals. Those include:
• StatBook Companion. This 3.5-inch by 6.5-inch bifold card includes current maternal and infant health data. Front and back of the card provide a portrait of perinatal outcomes "On an Average Day in the U.S." and "Quick Stats for the U.S." for quick referencing. When the card is opened, it reveals detailed data presented by race and ethnicity.
• March of Dimes Perinatal Data Slide Set. This set of 60 35mm color slides includes current national perinatal data. Slides are color adaptations of graphs and figures in the March of dimes StatBook described above. Topics include folic acid awareness and consumption among women of childbearing age, infant mortality, low birth weight, prenatal care utilization, prematurity, multiple births, and births to teens. The slide set costs $60.
• March of Dimes Nursing Module Program. Nursing modules are self-directed monographs designed for registered nurses and nurse-midwives. Nurses who complete a module can receive contact hours that are recognized by most state licensing boards and recertification organizations. The modules may be used for independent study of facilitated group instruction. More than 10 titles are available, including modules on ethical decision making for perinatal nurses, high-risk antepartal home care, pre-term labor prevention and management, perinatal impact of substance abuse, and nursing assessment of the pregnant woman. Modules cost $15. There is an additional $35 fee to apply for contact hours.
