As Hospital Peer Review was going to press, the Oakbrook Terrace, IL-based Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) began soliciting comments from 4,000 providers, hospital associations, and consumer groups regarding its newly released proposed standard on the use of restraint and seclusion. The tentative implementation date for the new standards is scheduled to be July 2000. HPR will have complete coverage of the restraint standards in its January 2000 issue.
In the meantime, if you want to contact the Joint Commission with questions or concerns regarding the use of physical restraints, call JCAHO’s Stand ards Interpretation Unit at (630) 792-5900.
