Procedure ends chronic nasal congestion, snoring
The Center for Corrective Surgery in Philadel phia recently announced a new technique that corrects chronic nasal congestion and snoring in less than one minute.
"What is remarkable about this new treatment is that we can actually see the tissue shrinking and the nasal passages opening up immediately after surgery, without a long wait or major surgery," says Mansoor Madani, MD, director of the Center for Corrective Surgery. "This could be the procedure of the future replacing nasal sprays, decongestants, and bandages. It could put an end to many years of suffering for more than 1 billion people worldwide with this problem."
The procedure, Coblation Channeling, uses very mild heat over the enlarged areas in the nose and throat to shrink tissues. Coblation uses a similar radiofrequency technique to the more common somnoplasty. However, because coblation is performed under local rather than general anesthesia, the patient remains awake and the treatment can be performed in the doctor’s office.
Madani says other advantages of coblation over somnoplast or more invasive procedures using surgical blades, lasers, or electrocautery include less pain, faster healing, and reduced postoperative care. Madani is studying the results of coblation for snoring, sleep apnea, and chronic nasal congestion. A graphic animation of the coblation technique is available at www. snorenet.com.
