EAP usage increases
The overall employee assistance program (EAP) prevalence rate in the United States increased from 33% in 1993 to 39% in 1995, according to a study published in the February 1999 issue of The Journal of Behavioral Health Services & Research. The study further found that of those work sites with EAPs in 1995, 17% had internal programs, 80% had external programs, and 3% had both.
The average cost per employee for internal EAPs increased from $26.59 to $27.69, while the cost per employee of external EAPs rose from $21.47 to $22.19. The differential in cost between internal and external EAPs was probably due in part to differences in service provision, the article suggests.
Internal EAPs provided more assessment and referral services and health promotion activities in 1995 than in 1993. External EAPs were more likely in 1995 than in 1993 to participate in constructive confrontations with employees, offer short-term counseling, and become involved in health promotion activities. However, external programs were less likely to offer consultation services with supervisors in 1995.
