• BayCare Health System (Clearwater, FL) CEO Frank Murphy knows just what to do when his competition sits in the middle of a damaging government investigation, said a report in the St. Petersburg Times. He is grabbing market share as fast as he can. BayCare is the non-profit competitor of Columbia/HCA Healthcare (Nashville, TN), the company pursued by government investigators that has been selling off hospitals and home health agenices over the past year. In turn, BayCare has picked up the management contract on a hospital in New Port Richey, taken over a non-profit mental healthcare provider in Hernando and Pasco counties, and has filed plans to build a nursing and assisted living facility in Pasco County. It has also opened a $22 million outpatient center in Pinellas County. While expanding in the north Florida counties, BayCare is consolidating operations at its two hospitals in south Pinellas County. A consultant is reviewing operations at St. Anthony’s Hospital and Bayfront Medical Center. BayCare netted $25 million on $1.1 billion in revenues in FY97.
