Opthamologist pays $750,000 in false claims settlement
An ophthalmologist in Worcester, MA, has agreed to pay $750,000 to settle a false claims suit that charged he had billed Medicare for medically unnecessary procedures and split glaucoma tests, known as visual field examinations, by checking each eye on separate days rather than both eyes on one visit. The physician also claimed personal supervision when he wasn’t around, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Boston. This is the largest health fraud settlement in Massachusetts against a solo practitioner.
