Well Workplace Checklist
This checklist summarizes the standards required for an organization to be designated as a Well Workplace by the Wellness Councils of America (WELCOA) for its health promotion program.
Senior Management Support
Demonstrated by:
a formal written statement communicated to all employees
health promotion as part of a department
an individual or team in charge of program planning
senior managers participate in program planning and activities
Strategic Planning
health promotion is part of the organization’s formal strategic plan
Program Integration
Demonstrated by:
a representative wellness committee
a mission or vision for the program
overall goals for the program
integrated relationships between health promotion and other departments
Employee and Organizational Needs Assessment
Assessments have been conducted within the last three years and summarized in writing. Data have been gathered in the following areas:
demographics
facilities
organizational culture
employee health survey or health risk appraisal
Circle all of the following assessments completed at your organization:
policy assessment, review of health care cost/utilization data, dependents’ health needs/interests, injury records review, focus group interviews with employees, physical fitness assessment, union support assessment, workers’ compensation claims, work and family needs assessment
Written Annual Operating Plan
Assessment data have been summarized and used to develop a health promotion operating plan including:
overall goals/objectives of the program
clear, concise, measurable goals/objectives based on assessment results
evaluation plans
implementation plan and time line
description of promotional/marketing strategies
budget sufficient to implement the program
needs of multiple or remote sites
Employee Ownership and Feedback
a formal channel for feedback regarding health issues and the health promotion program
Diverse Employee Groups
identifies and addresses needs of diverse employee groups
Policies and Benefit Options
four to eight written organizational policies and benefit options (sick/well days off, flex time, job-sharing, vacation, family leave, tuition reimbursement, etc.)
written policies and supportive programming for:
tobacco use restrictions
emergency procedures
alcohol and drug abuse policy
safe driving practices
healthful food options
Community Resources and Involvement
provides continuous updates about availability of community resources in areas of need (child care, elder care, financial planning, etc.)
publicly supports community health promotion activities
Work and Family
identifies and addresses issues relating to balancing work and family
Disability Management
practices disability prevention and management
Programs
provides self-care and consumer health information including any or all of the following:
books
videos
newsletter articles
brochures
training workshops, lectures, or seminars
offers minimum of five health promotion programs to family members and retirees
implements health promotion programs in awareness, education, and behavior change levels as detailed in the operating plan; list the number of programs implemented at each level within 12 months:
