The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has developed the National Occupational Research Agenda, which outlines 21 priority areas for a national research program to protect workers from job-related injuries, illnesses, and deaths. Aims of the new agenda for workplace safety and health are to focus research on critical needs, improve use of existing resources, and leverage programs to meet common goals. The American Diabetes Association has launched a Diabetes Control Network (DCN) help line to help ensure early diagnosis, comprehensive therapy, and improved self-management for people with diabetes. In addition to morbidity and mortality caused by the disease, annual economic costs are estimated at $92 billion for direct medical care and lost workplace productivity. You can encourage HCWs with diabetes to enroll directly in the DCN and receive information to help them manage their disease. As a health care provider, you also can call to receive support. The Weight Control Information Network (WIN), a program of the National Institutes of Health's Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease, is a source of information on weight control, obesity, and weight-related disorders for health professionals.
