Medline is now free; expect some company
The National Library of Medicine, part of the National Institutes of Health, can be accessed free at www.nlm.nih.gov on the World Wide Web. Previously, mostly professionals accessed the database for a fee. But Vice President Al Gore opened the gates for all Americans in June when he announced the new Web site. This may present some problems for professionals doing literature searches or research, especially if the site becomes a favorite medical news haunt for consumers.
If the nlm.nih address is busy, you can access Medline through Medscape, the largest on-line list of medical abstracts, at www.medscape.com.
