HMOs will reimburse chiropractic, acupuncture
Within the next two years, expect more health maintenance organizations to offer their members chiropractic and acupuncture therapies. Those are the top two alternative medicine therapies HMOs are contemplating, according to a new study, Health Maintenance Organizations and Alternative Medicine: A Closer Look. The study surveyed marketing or medical directors at HMOs in 13 states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Texas, Utah, and Washington.
Seventy percent of the HMOs reported an increase in requests from members for alternative care therapies. The top three requested therapies were Acupuncture, chiropractic and massage therapy. Some 58% of the HMOs indicated they would offer the alternative therapies within the next two years.
