Guide addresses life-saving’ issues
A guide to help people plan for their death was recently published by the University of California San Francisco (UCSF)/Mount Zion Medical Center with the aid of a $5,000 grant from the Women's Auxiliary at the medical center. The booklet, Planning for Your Future: An Approach to Life and Death with Dignity, was developed by a group of 24 experts including physicians, ethicists, nurses, and therapists who work at Mount Zion and the UCSF Cancer Center.
Discussion about such procedures as cardiopulmonary resuscitation and artificial breathing should take place before such interventions are likely to be used, says Ernest Rosenbaum, MD, clinical professor of medicine at Mount Zion and book co-author.
"People want to be able to make these decisions, and this guide provides the information in a concise, readable version," he says.
Recent surveys suggest that fewer than 10% to 15% of the population has prepared advance directives. The guide is designed to help physicians and patients share that responsibility.
The booklet is available for a $5 donation. Contact: UCSF/Mount Zion Medical Center, 1600 Divisadero St., San Francisco, CA 94115 or UCSF Cancer Center, 2356 Sutter St., San Francisco, CA 94115. Telephone: (415) 885-3693.
