Medline is now free on the World Wide Web
The world’s largest collection of published medical information is now available free to the public and health care providers thanks to the National Library of Health, a part of the National Institutes of Health. In June, the library added free Medline to its Web site (http://www. nlm.nih.gov).
Previously users had to register and pay to search Medline and other library data bases.
Free access to Medline, a database of more than 8.8 million references to articles published in 3800 biomedical journals comes at a time when consumers are increasingly seeking to take their health care into their own hands. Many are turning to the Internet as a source of information about disease treatment and prevention.
Two Web-based products, Internet Grateful Med and PubMed, provide this service. Internet Grateful Med provides free access to MEDLINE, AIDSLINE, HEALTHSTAR. PubMed provides free access to MEDLINE.
