Internet users can use Web site for health info
Seniors aren’t the only ones who can benefit from increased access to health information on the World Wide Web. The National Library of Medicine (NLM) in Bethesda, MD, a part of the National Institutes of Health, has launched a new service to provide all Americans free Internet access to MEDLINE — the world’s most extensive collection of published medical information. Prior to this announcement, users had to register and pay to search MEDLINE and other NLM databases. The MEDLINE database offers more than 8.8 million references to articles published in 3,800 biomedical journals. Two Web-based products, Internet Grateful Med and PubMed, provide this service.
PubMed provides free access to MEDLINE and linkages to publishers’ sites for full-text journals. Initially 24 journals will be available, some by subscription only.
Internet Grateful Med provides free access to MEDLINE, AIDSLINE, HEALTHSTAR to users who already have an NLM user ID and password. If you do not have a user ID and password, you should use PubMed instead. Loansome Doc document delivery service is available through Internet Grateful Med.
This new service is the result of a collaboration between the NLM and major science publishers such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Science, Journal of Biological Chemistry, and The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
