National League of Nursing has new president
The National League of Nursing in New York City has named Rhetaugh Graves Dumas, PhD, RN, FAAN, president, and has chosen Nancy Sue Friedrich Langston, PhD, RN, as president-elect.
Dumas, who is vice provost for health affairs at the University of Michigan, was named president in June at the league’s 23rd biennial convention in Portland, OR. She succeeds Sheila Ryan, PhD, RN, FAAN, in the role of leading the nation’s oldest nursing organization.
Langston is the dean of the school of nursing at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Medical College of Virginia, and she’ll become president after the 24th convention in 1999.
Dumas specializes in psychiatric nursing and has focused on improving health care for people who have historically been neglected, including women, minorities, and children.
She has more than 40 years of experience in nursing education, practice, research, and administration. She has served as dean and professor of the school of nursing at the University of Michigan from 1981 to 1994. She also was the deputy director of Alcohol, Drug Abuse and Mental Health Administration at the National Institute of Mental Health from 1979 to 1981.
Her experience also includes holding faculty and nursing service positions at Yale University School of Nursing and Mental Health Center.
"My organizational philosophy includes the concept of mutuality, which means strengthening the effectiveness of an organization by helping the various components work collaboratively and co-operatively; that is the outlook I will bring to the league," Dumas says.
The National League of Nursing Accrediting Commission is an independent affiliate of the National League of Nursing, and it’s the official accrediting body of the country’s nursing schools. For more information, visit the league’s Web site at http://www.nln.org.
