PHP expands integrated health care into Louisiana
Reston, Va-based PHP Healthcare Corp. announced it will establish a statewide integrated health care delivery system and physician practice management company with Louisiana Medical Mutual Insurance Company (LAMMICO).
LAMMICO Practice Management (LPM), a subsidiary company, will establish a network of key health care providers, provide management systems and technology, and market the system to local managed care health plans. This business venture represents the first statewide integrated healthcare delivery system in Louisiana, PHP says.
"With similar projects in Georgia and Florida, our relationship with LAMMICO augments our southern strategy," says PHP president and CEO, Jack M. Mazur.
LPM was created as a subsidiary by LAMMICO in 1996 to offer physicians a direct connection to the growing physician practice management market.
"As physicians, we have seen managed care companies attempt to erode our control over the delivery of care and to create a gap between the physician and the patient," says LAMMICO president and CEO Robert L. di Benedetto, MD. "Through this venture, LPM will create a physician friendly managed care environment that will close that gap and enhance the quality of care for people across the state."
As a result of the partnership, LPM is now owned 60% by LAMMICO (which is owned by its physician policyholders) and 40% by PHP. With physician and hospital participation, it is anticipated that ownership will ultimately be 30% by LAMMICO, 30 percent by aligned physicians, 20% by hospital partners, and 20% by PHP.
