Find out more about your state’s plans
The University of Minnesota, School of Public Health’s Division of Health Services Research and Policy, based in Minneapolis, has done extensive research on the use of long-term care vs. home and community-based services in the United States. The profiles analyze how each state utilizes long-term care funds and ranks states according to their progress in moving away from nursing home services and toward home care.
Wendy Veazie, a member of the research team who conducted the study, says the University is in the midst of updating the original report published in 1995. The new report is due out this summer. The project, currently funded by the Princeton, NJ-based Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, is titled Balancing Long-term Care Systems.
The university will work with a select group of states to determine the best strategies to control long-term care spending and how to reallocate those funds to home and community-based programs.
For more information about your state’s status in using long-term care funds, check out the Administration on Aging’s Web site for the 1995 report. The site offers visitors state-specific data and numerous tables of information relating to long-term care and nursing home use. E-mail: www.aoa.dhhs.gov/aoa/ hcbltc/profiles/index.html.
