Moms demand ultrasound
Even when ultrasounds are not medically necessary or covered by insurance, pregnant women want them, announced researchers from the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, MI, at the recent annual meeting in Chicago of the Radiological Society of North America, based in Oak Brook, IL.
The study found that almost all of the 318 women questioned thought an ultrasound was important to ensure their babies were healthy. In addition, two-thirds of the women disagreed when asked if an ultrasound should be performed only in the case of problem pregnancies. In fact, 44% of women surveyed said they would pay up to $200 for the procedure, which usually costs between $300 and $400.
