Program rewards staff with low-dollar cost
You're probably being asked to do more with less in your department, while rewarding staff for the good work they do. Roxanna DeMoss, director of hospital patient access at Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus, says that a "Bravo" reward system has worked very well to provide registration staff with recognition.
The Bravo reward system is used by patients, other department staff, and management-level staff. "It was created to give us the power to make one another feel appreciated," says DeMoss.
Bravo cards are provided at all registration sites, so patients can fill them out when they want to express encouraging comments. A welcome letter is given to all inpatients at the end of their registration, with information about the admission process and the patient satisfaction survey they will be receiving. "We have scripted our staff to say, 'Is there anything else I could have done today to make your visit a better one?'" says DeMoss. "On-the-spot Bravos are rewarded immediately."
A recent e-mail from the emergency department clinical team to two registration staff members stated, "Thanks for your amazing display of teamwork!"
"This kind of message coming from the clinical team really promotes a great working environment for both departments," says DeMoss.
When a supervisor "catches" a staff member doing good work, they immediately give praise. "They are rewarded with a Bravo recognition sticker to wear proudly," says DeMoss.
As the number of Bravos a staff member receives increases throughout the year, he or she receives certificates to be exchanged for movie tickets or gift shop credits. Staff members who receive more than 25 in a year are sent a thank-you note by the management team. "A personal thank-you note is extremely important to our staff," says DeMoss. "Many keep them at home or display them at their workstation proudly."
