• B-Tree Systems (Eden Prairie, MN) has released the Validor Pro, an automated, non-intrusive test environment for embedded systems with human interfaces. The system is designed to automate functional testing for manufacturers that work in the areas of medical devises, process control, semiconductor OEM, transaction processing, and the defense industry. It consists of test software that helps users create and execute test scripts, and a target interface subsystem that provides non-intrusive stimulation and monitoring of the system being tested.
• Etsee Soft (Pennington, NJ) has re-released its flagship product, LifeConnect. The updated product uses off-the-shelf monitoring devices, and even television sets, to provide patient management, monitoring, and education. Patients who use LifeConnect can continue treatment in their homes while healthcare professionals monitor care. The system also provides reminders and education while monitoring patients.
• Gemplus (Havant, United Kingdom) has begun pilot trials of its Qualidiab smart card which allows diabetic patients to carry all vital information of his or her illness and current treatment. Using a smart card reader, physicians and diabetologists can access the most recent information and then send any new data to update records. Access of the information is limited to appropriate caregivers at appropriate levels. The trials are being conducted in Corbeille, France, and Barcelona, Spain.
• Health Risk Management (Minneapolis) has re leased Version 2.0 of its QualityFirst guideline-based system for managing medical risk. It is designed on a Windows platform to adapt to existing information system platforms. It features on-demand customizable reporting that allows users to sort diagnosis and treatment information by health plan, medical group, provider, and facility.
• Henley Healthcare (Sugar Land, TX), a provider of pain management, physical therapy, and rehabilitation products, has changed its Web site to include e-commerce. The company manufactures more than 1,000 therapeutic and pain management products, including name brand products from Cybex Medical Division.
• Madenta (Edmonton, Canada) has launched a new product that allows people who do not have use of their hands to control a computer through head movements. The Tracker 2000 allows a person to move the cursor on a computer simply by moving his or her head. The system, which includes a camera that sits on top of the computer, tracks a tiny reflective dot worn on the user’s forehead, which converts head movements into mouse movements. The Tracker 2000 operates with the IntelliPoint software from Microsoft (Redmond, WA).
• NovaTelligence (San Diego) has released Med-Path, a Windows-based client server application that allows NTI customers to transform static, paper-based guidelines into adaptable tools for point-of-care use. By presenting guidelines in an algorithm format, Med-Path allows physicians to quickly navigate guidelines to find the most appropriate information for each presenting complaint. The system also can prompt a physician to jump from one guideline to another with the appropriate information is given, transferring the patient-relevant data from the first guideline to the next. It currently is bundled with 23 clinical guidelines.
• The Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) at the National Institutes of Health and the Agriculture Department’s National Agriculture Library have launched a new International Bibliographic Information on Dietary Supplements database. It includes published, international, scientific literature on dietary supplements, and is available to the public at no charge. It can be accessed through the ODS Internet home page.
• Soma (Seattle) has launched Soma.com, an Internet pharmacy. In addition to dispensing prescription medications, the site offers over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, health care products, health and beauty aids, and alternative remedies. Pharmacists will be available 24 hours a day to advise patients via both e-mail and a toll-free telephone number.
