News Brief: Pharmacy groups partner on national certification
The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) in Washington, DC, has joined with the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) in Park Ridge, IL, on a national certification program for pharmacy technicians, which was effective Jan. 1, 2002.
This announcement follows a 15-month effort of the two organizations working jointly to address the May 2000 NABP resolution on pharmacy technicians. This resolution sought to review existing certification programs to determine whether the development of NABP’s competence assessment program for pharmacy technicians should be a cooperative effort with other groups.
In its role in PTCB, NABP will work with state boards of pharmacy to encourage the acceptance of the PTCB certification program as a recognized assessment tool for pharmacy technicians. In addition, NABP will incorporate the use of the PTCB certification program into its Model State Pharmacy Act and Model Rules. PTCB will create an officer position on the Board of Governors designated as "Chair of the Certification Council" to be filled by NABP’s executive director.
The PTCB exam will be administered on July 27 and Nov. 16, 2002. The application receipt deadlines are May 31 and Sept. 20 for the July and November exam administrations. Candidates are encouraged to apply online at the PTCB web site, www.ptcb.org. The application fee is $120.
