Five-star political will’ brought to bear
The New Jersey National TB Center should be settling into new digs by the middle of this month. The International Center for Public Health (ICPH), a 161,600-square-foot building that cost $66 million, will house the National TB Center as well as the Public Health Research Institute, formerly of New York City, and the New Jersey Medical School Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics.
Center to house world-class infrastructure’
"I’ve been talking for years about the importance of political will," says Lee Reichman, MD, MPH, director of the National TB Center. "Well, what this represents is five-star political will. The state of New Jersey and the university are saying here that TB is so important that they’ll provide this world-class infrastructure to do patient care, research, education, and epidemiology."
With the university’s new School of Public Health also due to occupy office space in the building, and the new Center for Emerging Pathogens (under the direction of Gerrold Ellner, PhD) right down the street, the ICPH will bring substantial scope and focus to TB-fighting efforts, Reichman adds. "This brings together the biggest collection of people working on TB in the country, if not the world," he adds.
The ICPH’s official opening will take place in conjunction with World TB Day on March 24th. Ken Castro, MD, director of the Division of TB Elimination (DTBE) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, will address Grand Rounds; the DTBE is expected to announce provisional case data for last year; and the National Coalition to Eliminate Tuberculosis will present a report on the domestic TB funding gap.
